What Does “Transversal” Mean?

The term transversal refers to modes of thought, communication, and knowledge production that move across disciplinary, institutional, cultural, and conceptual boundaries. Rather than treating knowledge as fragmented into isolated fields, transversality emphasizes dialogue, interaction, and the emergence of new perspectives through interconnectedness (Guattari, 2015).

Originally developed by Félix Guattari, the concept of transversality challenged rigid institutional hierarchies by advocating multidirectional communication and collaborative forms of knowledge production. It was later expanded through the philosophical work of Gilles Deleuze and Guattari, particularly in their concept of the rhizome, which conceives knowledge as a dynamic network of relationships rather than a linear or hierarchical structure (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987).
